A must do for the bucket list is World-Heritage listed Fraser Island with its towering, untouched ancient rainforests, pristine freshwater lakes and coloured sands.

Another unbeatable experience is Lady Elliot Island.  A short scenic flight will take you to the island and the start of the Great Barrier Reef where you can step off the beach into a magical world of unrivalled coral and marine life and snorkel alongside giant manta rays and turtles.

Maryborough itself is one of Queensland’s oldest cities where 19th century guides spin yarns of slave traders and newsettlers, steam trains chug through riverside parks and a time cannon is firedon city streets. Once one of Australia’slargest and busiest ports in the lead up to Federation, the city’s beautifully preserved colonial streets are filled with living history and magnificent heritage architecture.

How to get there

Self Drive

Maryborough is just 3 hours drive (255km) north of Brisbane along the Bruce Highway (A1). Hervey Bay is a further 34km north-east of Maryborough.

By Air

Virgin Blue operates direct jet services from Sydney to the Fraser Coast Airport, Hervey Bay daily, with convenient connections from most Australian capitals. Qantaslink has flights from Brisbane to Fraser Coast Airport, Hervey Bay daily. Airport Shuttle Hervey Bay provides transfer services from Fraser Coast Airport to Maryborough and return meeting all services.

By Rail

Queensland Rail operates regular services from Brisbane, Rockhampton and Cairns into Maryborough West train station. Transfers into Maryborough CBD can be included via the Trainlink bus service, which connects with every train.

By Coach

Greyhound and Premier operate several northbound (from Brisbane) and southbound (from Cairns) services each day to Maryborough. Greyhound operate daily services from the Maryborough to Brisbane.
